VMA's 2013 - Things That Make You Go...Hmmmmm?

The Video Music Awards went down last night in New York City and I woke up this morning with a bad impression of the whole thing overall.

Yes, it is pop culture and yes there needs to be exciting and new content to keep the audience interested and engaged but NO we do not need to be exposed to crappy lip syncing, simply bad choreography and horrid performance outfits!

Please see below for my top 3 moments that got my attention

#1 Miley Cyrus being completely talentless and has the most horrendous fashion of the year thus far - in my opinion.

This is called a 'red carpet' look?

Please, please, please put your tongue back in your mouth!
#2 Lady Gaga's performance outfit which ends up being her, sit down and watch the show outfit?

Even for Gaga this is bad!

Far right...she is still in the shell swimsuit. Why?

#3 The fact that Taylor Swift is still making every public event into a 'who dumped me or made me feel bad in anyway' spectacle.

As some of you may or may not know Ms. Swift was at one point dated a boy bander from the group One Direction. And when his group goes up on stage to accept an award she gets caught on camera mouthing 'Shut the F-up'. Seriously? And then, when she wins for I Knew You Were Trouble, she makes a point of calling out the person who inspired the song – “you know who you are”. Remember John Mayer and Kanye West...she is still making references to those two!

Like enough is enough....grow up and act like a lady!

Points for good dress, hair and makeup

On a positive note...Taylor Swift did have a gorgeous dress on with great hair and makeup...10 points but minus 11 for acting like you are still in high school! Still in the negative T Swift ;)

That is a mini version of my rant...overall I just think the comittee at the VMA's need to tighten the reigns and make a slicker, more polished show or the by 2018 its just going to be a strip show to lip-syncing "artists".

Cheers!

J Crew Style Sessions

J Crew Style Sessions

J Crew hosted it first ever style sessions in Calgary, AB last Thursday at Chinook Centre and I was there as a contributing Personal Stylist where I pulled together my favourite fall looks! Attendees had the opportunity to learn how to rock the J Crew layered look and how to accessories in new and exciting ways, plus possibly be featured in the upcoming Style Guide!

What I love about J Crew is the amount of colour, print and textures that come out in every collection whether it be S/S or F/W.

Layering mixed prints with some signature bling.
Excursion Vest in Stripe $160USD and Boy shirt $89USD in polka dot.

Nothing says J Crew like the jewels!

Mixed crystal and resin stacked necklaces. Both $178USD

Talking Trends With Lisa Tant At Holt Renfrew ~ Fall 2013

We were excited to be invited to see Lisa Tant, former Editor in Chief of Flare magazine and current Vice President Fashion Editor at Holt Renfrew, preview the Fall trends. It was a wonderful event hosted at Holts in the CORE, mingling with with Moet, catching up with our fashion friends and taking in some steller style.

Lisa's top trends for Fall/Winter 2013 were 'Coat Check' - oversized coats, 'Pretty in Punk' - leather, plaid, studs, 'Black, White & Red', 'Print Masters' - multiple prints, 'Fur Frenzy' - luxe furs, real or faux.

It was great event, an extremely well styled show and lots of fun!

Kudos to the Holts team!

Cheers!

Silver Icing

Silver Icing Online & Retail

Silver Icing is based out of British Columbia and is helmed by entrepreneur Christina Marcano (previous partner in Skyler Clothing). The philosophy for Silver Icing is simple "have your cake and eat it too, there is no need to sacrifice fashionability or quality for affordability"

Why I love Silver Icing is because they have super cute clothing that is eco-conscious and affordable! My three top favourites are: the Carrie Romper (so hot), the Heidi Pant & the Stila Pant.

The Carrie Romper is currently my fav piece! I would style it with long layered necklaces, colourful wedge sandals and beach ready hair.

Carrie Romper: Wide full leg, strapless, waist defining. Made in the USA. $69.95

Heidi Pant is available for Pre-Order. I am loving these because they are comfy, casual but still on trend. Think Alexander Wang for inspiration. I would style this with a graphic t-shirt and a long cardigan for running errands.

Heidi Pant: 59% Cotton, 41% Poly. Made in the USA. $54.95

The Stila Pant is a staple pant for Fall/Winter! You can not beat the sexy skinny fit, gold hardware and zipper accents on the front pockets and at the ankle. I would style this with a chunky knit or oversized cashmere sweater and booties for the chilly seasons to come.

Stila Pant: 75% Cotton, 20% Poly, 5% Spandex. $74.95

Silver Icing is on the rise, it's a must to check out this company either on line or in the retailers that carry the brand.

Amanda Lindhout ~ ELLE Magazine

I dressed my good friend Amanda Lindhout in this photo for ELLE Magazine US, the September issue on stands now. She is wearing a beautiful chocolate brown leather jacket from one of my favorite designers, Mackage and they are Canadian.

Amanda is an incredible person with an amazing story to share and she does so in her book "A House In The Sky" that launches on Sept 10th. This is a must read!!! Also giving back through her The Global Enrichment Foundation that she founded months after being released.

Pops of Neon

This year summer brought back lots of neons because of the 80's and 90's trend. Many people view neons as junior or over the top but there are subtle ways to pull off pops of neon and make it look sophisticated.

1. Wear neon in small doses; my favourite is an accessory such as a necklace, a bracelet or two, or a statement shoe such as the Christian Louboutin Pigalle or cap toe (see below)

2. Try a bold neon nail colour; as this will not cost you over $10 to be a part of the trend

3. Try a neon coloured top; I love a silk neon top paired with skinny jeans and a pointed toe pump...tres chic!

Pops of Neon

Seriously...NEED these shoes!

However you choose to wear your neon, whether you bought it this summer and haven't worn it or you are picking it up on sale...don't be afraid to rock it out in your own style or based on my tips above.

Uniqlo - New York Shopping

While recently in New York I had amazing shopping success at another new favorite store of mine - Uniqlo. A Newyorker friend of mine calls it 'Japanese GAP on steroids' - well said! The flaghip store on 5th Avenue is HUGE - it is 3 levels and each is a square city block!!! Filled with every item imaginable in every color imaginable and all a great prices!

They are known for their affordable cashmere and puffy jackets made of ultra light down.

The only stores in North America so far are in New York and California but they are growing fast and have online shopping!
