YYC Fashion Recap: From the AW Styling Students

I unfortunately was unable to attend YYC Fashion Week due to being out of town...however, my fabulous Fashion Styling students from Artists Within Academy were on the scene to cover the top shows and bring you, our fabulous styleistas, the recaps.

Lionette
Lionette is designed by recent ACAD graduate Jessica Armstrong. Her inspiration comes from the romanticism and elegance of Disney Princesses and is brought to life through the use of chiffon and taffeta. What I loved about her designs was the contrast between the airy chiffon and the crispness of the taffeta; as well as, the use of bold red and saturated blue. After speaking with Jessica and better understanding her motivation behind her collection; I was able to appreciate the elegance and femininity in her designs as well as see the modern day princess in us all.

Lady Tais
Lady Tais is the versatile line designed by Taisia Novakhova, a Russian born designer. She draws inspiration from the life of the late Coco Chanel since she finds her life relatable in the way Coco always aspired to be different. What caught my eye from this Toronto designers collection was how she wasn't afraid to use bold prints and how she expressed elegance in the drape of her designs. She was able to design a collection that's wearable no matter what the occasion.

Malika
The woman behind the brand Malika, is India-born Malika Rajani. Within her collection at YYC Fashion Week, she incorporated plenty of leathers with unique details such as cut outs and defined silhouettes.  She also used softer, more sheer feminine fabrics which were a great juxtaposition to the boldness of the leather. Her designs captured the Calgary customer very well because of it's wearability, while still adding a bit of an unexpected twist. Overall her show was very enjoyable, and professionaly executed.

Intricate cut out details and loving the leather pants!

YYC Fashion Week is in it's third year of production therefore it is still in it's infancy and has some areas to improve upon. The show did not start on time, the host was a bit cheesy and the budget that was lent to supplying entertainment could have been better spent on location.

However, the turn out was enthusiastic, the fashion was fun and it's encouraging that Calgary is moving in this fashionable direction.

Thanks to Friney, Sharnae and Hannah for your mini recaps!
